Fall Reset: Simple Ways to Support Immunity and Energy from a Naturopath’s Perspective
As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter with the beginning of the fall season in Port Credit, Mississauga, it’s common to feel a little more tired, run-down, or susceptible to getting sick. In naturopathic medicine, autumn is a season of transition, and how you move through it determines how resilient you’ll be for the months ahead. Instead of waiting until you’re sick or depleted, now is the time to intentionally support your body’s natural rhythms. A few simple changes can help support your energy, digestion, sleep, and overall resilience as we head into the colder months.
Dress for the weather. It can be tempting to keep dressing like it’s summer, especially when the days are still relatively mild. But keeping your body warm and comfortable can help you feel more energized as temperatures drop. Try adding layers, wearing warm socks, and keeping your neck and lower back covered on colder days. Exposure to wind and cold, especially around the neck, feet, and lower back, may weaken the immune system. It’s not about fashion, it’s about circulation and resilience.
Choose more warming foods. As the weather cools down, it can be helpful to shift from cold, raw foods (which can dampen digestion and weaken immunity this time of year), toward more warming meals. Think soups, stews, roasted vegetables, curries, and slow-cooked meals. Ginger, garlic, and cinnamon are also easy ways to add warmth and flavour. Warm tea can be a simple swap for iced drinks throughout the day.
Pay attention to indoor air. As we close the windows and turn on the heat, indoor air can become dry and stale. When weather permits, open your windows for a few minutes to bring in fresh air. An air purifier can also be helpful, particularly in bedrooms or other frequently used spaces. Your lungs and brain function better with oxygen-rich and moving air, rather than stagnant heating.
You don’t need to completely change your routine this fall, you just need to realign with the season.
