How can physiotherapy help treat TMJ disorders?

physiotherapy treatment for TMJ

If you have a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), your dentist may refer you to a physiotherapist who specializes in TMJ for treatment.

Our treatment for TMJ encompasses two main goals: firstly to relieve pain and stiffness of the joint and surrounding area, and ultimately to restore or increase function and mobility of the jaw.

A thorough assessment will be conducted during your initial appointment with one of our therapists. This may include an examination of your posture, extraoral and intraoral (going into the mouth) palpation of the joint and surrounding muscles, and assessment of the range of motion and movement of the jaw and neck.

With confirmed TMD, your therapist will begin a course of treatment and recommend exercises for the jaw. With proper physiotherapy treatment, even the most severe symptoms of TMD can be relieved and managed. Depending on the severity and underlying cause of your TMJ, treatment sessions may begin with relieving pain and muscle spasm, and progress to soft tissue therapy on the jaw muscles as well as joint mobilizations. Your therapist will also teach you exercises to improve your jaw alignment and stability. With physiotherapy treatment and proper exercise, you should see increased function and mobility of the jaw including: opening and closing of the jaw, decreased deviation with opening, decreased locking and clicking, and decreased muscle tone in the surrounding area of the jaw.
